Seeking forgiveness for our sins is something each and every one of us should do without having to be reminded. ولی, one of the most over-looked sunnah’s of the Prophet SAW is to learn to forgive others as a means of nearness to Allah SWT.

پیامبر (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) گفت:

“There was a merchant who used to extend credit to people. If he found one of his customers to be in straightened means, he would say to his assistants: “Forgive them their debt, perhaps Allah will forgive us.” Allah did forgive him.”

[Bukhari/Muslim]

There are numerous hadith which talk about the virtue of forgiving others, and indeed, even when the Prophet SAW and his family were treated badly by others, he SAW would forgive them. Forgiving others is a hard thing to do, but there are so many benefits in this for the believer as we shall see below.

In another hadith, the Prophet SAW said:

"Have mercy on those on the earth, and the One in heaven will have mercy on you too

[ترمذی]

How you treat others is how you can expect to be treated by Allah SWT. If you are merciful and kind, Allah will be Merciful and kind to you. If you are harsh-hearted and refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters, then Allah will deal with you accordingly.

There is a famous incident in the time of the Prophet SAW where he was sat with the Sahaba and a man came whom the Prophet SAW said was a man of paradise. Intrigued to know more, one of the Sahaba Abdullah ibn Amr followed him and observed this man for three days, but couldn’t find anything special or out of the ordinary about him. So he asked the companion about what he does that makes him special and the man (خارج) couldn’t think of anything, but after a bit he said:

Every night, before I go to sleep, I forgive whoever has wronged me. I remove any bad feelings towards anyone from my heart.” (Something similar to that)

[Musnad Ahmed]

از این رو, receiving Allah’s forgiveness is not just about you asking for it and staying away from sin. It’s ALSO directly tied to your ability to forgive others who have wronged youand this means never ever speaking bad of them ever again or even holding a grudge.

The key thing to remember is that forgiveness is NEVER about the other person. نسبتا, you do it for yourself because you don’t want to hold onto ill feelings which eat away at you all the time. It’s also because you want to earn Allah’s forgiveness and His pleasureand what could be more beautiful than this!
