You body is an amanah from Allah SWT and it has rights over you. You should eat just enough to sustain yourself and never more, since excess is always bad for you.

On the authority of Al-Miqdaam ibn Maadiy-Karib who said:

‘’I heard the Holy Prophet (sa tiko vua na vakacegu kei na veivakalougatataki ni Kalou) tukuna: “No human ever filled a vessel worse than the stomach. Sufficient for any son of Adam are some morsels to keep his back straight. But if it must be, then one third for his food, one third for his drink and one third for his breath.”

[Ycidra, Ena-Tirmidhi, classed as Sahih]

The Sahabas never had to worry about diseases or problems caused by eating too much or by eating the wrong foods. This is because they recognized that eating good food and limiting how much they ate to just enough encouraged good health and meant they were strong, healthy and could worship Allah properly.

When you are obese, you put yourself at risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, joint pains and a whole host of other problems. Na kena dina, Imam Shafi’i is reported to have said:

“I have not filled myself in sixteen years because filling oneself makes the body heavy, removes clear understanding, induces sleep and makes one weak for worship.”

Eating too much is loathed in Islam. It was narrated that Naafi’ said: Ibn ‘Umar used not to eat until a poor man was brought to eat with him. I brought a man in to eat with him and he ate a great deal. E kaya o koya: ‘’O Naafi’, do not let this man enter upon me, for I heard the Messenger of Allaah (sa tiko vua na vakacegu kei na veivakalougatataki i Allaia) tukuna: “The kaafir eats in seven intestines.” [Bukhari & Lotu Vaka-Lotu]

The Prophet SAW used to fast on a Monday and a Thursday – and it has now been medically proven that fasting is not only considered excellent for treating obesity, but increases health and wellbeing. The Prophet SAW also used to have days where he would eat mostly raw food.

Raw food has also been proven to dramatically improve your health and your energy levels, and prevents you feeling tired and sluggish.

This is also one of the reasons why the Prophet SAW was able to stand for many hours in prayer.

May Allah SWT make us all those who care more about the stomachs of poor people than our own ameen.
