Pravietis (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) teica, “The Son of Adam is made old and grey-haired by two things: Ardent seeking (of the Dunya) and envy.” [musulmanis, Ibn Majah |, Ahmads]

Happiness is not something that comes easy to many people due to the stressful lives they lead. You should always pre-occupy yourself with the love of Allah first and foremost. Working hard and striving to be the best in everything is PART of imaan.

It’s ok to work hard to provide for your family, but to constantly strive to do so just because you want to show people that you’re successful is seeking the dunya – and this is a spiritual disease of the heart.

With regards to envy, then one needs to understand that busying yourself with constantly wanting what others have and wishing they don’t have it is a sign of a sick heart and a weakness of imaan. Not only does this cause you misery, but the envy destroys whatever good you have in your own life too. This is because you dismiss what you have and don’t think that what Allah has given you is enough for you. And this is a form of ingratitude which is severely disliked.

Allah says in the Quran:

"Un [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]” (Quran14:7)

Therefore the secret to being happy is not to neglect the akhirah in pursuit of the dunya and to be grateful for everything Allah has given you. Atcerieties, if you take the time to count your own blessings, you’ll have no time to be envious of the blessings they have!
